Dorset Walks

Friday May 25th Gore Hill, Batcombe

It's been three years since we last visited this amazing site with its outstanding views over north Dorset to Somerset. Last time we were here in the evening and at the time we said that we must visit again earlier in the day to see more butterflies. This afternoon we hope to see a number of species including the tiny but very attractive Green Hairstreak.
We should see a number of other butterfly species as well including Common Blues, Holly Blues and Brimstones.
However the real target for the day has got to be the elusive Duke of Burgundy, a butterfly that varies greatly in numbers from year to year and has lately been very difficult to see in Dorset at all.
The wild flowers should at their best at the end of May. We're bound to see a huge variety including Sanicle, a scarce species of undisturbed woodland.
